Vanessa Dion Fletcher | With the support of this award, Vanessa studied traditional quillwork embroidery; her new work will be on view in Crosscurrents: Canada in the Making, opening at the TMC on June 27, 2018.

Omar Badrin | Omar explores his transracial identity by crocheting sculptural portraits with fishing twine – methods and materials that refer to traditional crafts of Newfoundland, where he was raised. His solo exhibition at Toronto’s Birch Contemporary is currently on view.

About the Award
Launched in 2017, the MLEA Award helps emerging artists conduct self-directed activities such as art production, apprenticeships, residencies or research. The award is in memory and honour of Melissa Levin (1958-2015), an artist, mentor and teacher whose career as a textile and costume designer was synonymous with her exuberant love of colour and pattern.

About the Fund
Since 2017, many generous individuals have contributed in excess of $8500 to the MLEA Fund. We rely on donations from family, friends and community. If you would like to be part of this important initiative, please visit textilemuseum.ca/join-support/give or call 416-599-5321 x2246.
