Pablo Rasgado

Rasgado’s finished art works will be made out of the white painted drywall of the booth that every participating gallery encounters when they arrive to install their artworks. Rasgado will cut into and peel back the top layer of paint in controlled shapes making an abstract image that will resemble the patterns of a fractal spread. The final form will depend upon the depth of the cut he makes, the density of the drywall, and the way he folds back the top layer. Varying colors might appear depending upon how the wall was previously painted.
In Paint Study, Rasgado inverts the art fair model. Instead of bringing works to the fair that were created in his studio, Rasgado will use the very structure of the art fair to create works during the fair. Collectors will be able to choose a piece of the wall and they can take it with them at any time during the fair. They can select a big area or a small area. It can be rectangular in shape or otherwise. In this way, collectors will determine the final appearance of the work. The short duration of the art fair is also taken into account–art production will only occur during the five day run of the fair, and when it closes on Sunday, the remaining pieces of drywall will be destroyed leaving only those pieces which were purchased by collections as the tangible record of the project.
Born in 1984 in Zapopan (Jalisco, Mexico), Rasgado studied Visual Arts at the Autonomous University of Morelos State. He has received three grants from the Mexican National Fund for Culture and Arts. His work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City (2010); Stonehouse, Lagos (2010); Hessel Museum of Art & Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, (2010); Muca Roma, Mexico City (2009) and the National Museum of Prints, Mexico City (2006). He lives and works in Mexico City.

He has received three grants from the Mexican National Fund for Culture and Arts and has taken part in several residency programs. He lives and works in Mexico City.
