Steve Turner is pleased to present I’ll Pick You Up, a solo exhibition by Paris-based Rose Barberat which features recent paintings inspired by the artist’s Summer 2022 visit to Los Angeles. The paintings are predominantly painted in shades of orange with some having contrasting accents of green and red. They depict scenes that relate to the physical aspects of travel–the car to or from the airport, airplanes on the tarmac, toting one’s luggage–as well as the emotional and mental aspects relating to fantasy, anticipation, uncertainty and anxiety. Orange represents light and heat and alludes to a California sunset. Its intensity amplifies Barberat’s dystopian cinematic narrative which suggests that the sun might be setting for the last time.
Rose Barberat (born 1994, St. Claude, Jura, France) earned a Masters of Art at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2021) before having her first solo exhibition at Galerie Pact, Paris in the same year. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions and art fairs in Italy, Belgium, Israel and Mexico. This is Barberat’s first solo exhibition in the United States and her first with Steve Turner.
