Steve Turner is pleased to present Iconic Paintings, a solo exhibition by Dublin-based Jingze Du that features new gestural paintings in gray, black and white which recontextualize iconic paintings from the past. The series was introduced in Du’s debut solo exhibition in New York in May 2023 where two works based on Picasso women, one on Velasquez’s Las Meninas and one on Leonardo’s Mona Lisa were presented alongside his refined, tightly painted works typical of the past five years. Works based on masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Manet, and Van Gogh were later presented in Copenhagen and Shanghai. At Art Düsseldorf, for the first time, Du will mount a solo exhibition that consists exclusively of works from the new series with reinterpretations of masterpieces by Goya, Vermeer and Manet. In these works, Du paints quickly and expressively to see how far he can deviate from the original and still leave enough recognizable content. In this way, he has created works that require a viewer’s memory and imagination to flesh out the image.

Jingze Du (born 1995, Yantai, China) moved to Dublin when he was thirteen years old. He later earned his BA at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin (2017) and his MA from the Royal College of Art, London (2019). He has had solo exhibitions at Sifang Museum, Shanghai (2022); Steve Turner, Los Angeles (May & October, 2020, 2021 & 2023); Steve Turner, New York (2023) and Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing / Shanghai (2021 & 2023). This is his first exhibition in Germany.
