CARLOS MARTIEL: PESO

Artshock | October 13, 2022

Carlos Martiel (Havana, 1989 – lives and works between New York and Havana) uses his body as an axis of conflict to unearth issues of race, migration, isolation and injustice. Since 2007, he has presented 90 performances, many of which draw on the experience of structurally oppressed and culturally and historically marginalized minorities.

The artist investigates this collective heritage of pain, resistance, and survival to transform it into self-inflicted bodily rituals of violence and sacrifice, channeling through a visceral language his radical and sincere vision of humanity’s long struggle against otherness. The forceful and poetic images created and embodied by the artist offer a testimony of those uncomfortable truths that continue to shake our societies to the core.
