Serrated leaves, swollen stems, claws, feathers, and spores adorn Vincent Cy Chen’s biomorphic sculptures. In his New York City studio, the Taiwan-born artist begins with steel armatures that he meticulously builds up using carved polystyrene. He then coats the sculptures’ surfaces with resin clay, fiberglass, lacquer, and acrylic gouache before engineering electricity and neon through their chimerical bodies to give them an inner glow.
