Steve Turner Contemporary is pleased to present House of Games, a solo exhibition by Fabiola Torres-Alzaga consisting of two vitrines, a group of drawings and a video. Torres-Alzaga uses magic, illusion and special effects to create works that are not always what they appear to be. The title of the exhibition derives from the David Mamet film in which deception, perception and viewpoint are all components in determining what is real.

The custom-made vitrines house tables and playing cards utilizing a 19th century aesthetic. Through the use of mirrors, the scene varies according to the vantage point of the viewer who must circumnavigate the vitrine, and in so doing, the artist allows the viewer to see both the mechanics of the illusion and the illusion itself. The drawings and the video work in a similar fashion in that they simultaneously reveal what is visible and what is hidden. The works evoke the sensations one might have experienced in a 19th century cabinet of curiosities or magic lantern show.

Born in Mexico City in 1978 and educated there, Fabiola Torres-Alzaga studied at the Active School of Photography and La Esmeralda. She had a solo exhibition at Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros, Mexico City (2004) and will have her second solo museum exhibition at El Chopo, Mexico City in October 2013. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City (2011); Zapopan Museum of Art, Jalisco, Mexico (2010) and Luis Adelantado Gallery, Mexico City (2010). Torres-Alzaga lives and works in Mexico City.
