Steve Turner Contemporary is pleased to present Playback, a four-channel video and sound installation by the Los Angeles-based artist, Julie Orser, that considers the ephemeral nature of memory and time. It is her first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Combining animation with live action, Playback presents the story of a discontented, middle-class, teenage girl named Crystal, who seeks refuge in her room and creates a tape-recorded diary for her future self. As she reflects on her life, her room displays mysterious characteristics until the final scene when it disintegrates, and Crystal and her cat, Still Life, slip into a void. A collection of the character’s artworks, from when the diary was recorded, will accompany the video installation.

Julie Orser earned an MFA from California Institute of the Arts (2005) and a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art (1999). She has had a solo exhibitions at Changing Role Gallery, Rome (2008) and Paul Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles (2007) and her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (2010); The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (2009) and The Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena (2009). Orser co-founded ART OFFICE for Film & Video, an organization that promotes artists working in time-based media. She also is the New Genres Lab Supervisor in the Department of Art at UCLA.
