Steve Turner is pleased to participate at KIAF 2023 with a two-person booth featuring new works by Drew Dodge and Tiger Rocha. Both artists delve into the mysteries of the human psyche while questioning their place in the world.
Dodge constructs a universe where anthropomorphic figures exist within otherworldly landscapes. Figures and skulls are engulfed by celestial bodies; they walk under rainbows and rest under galactic skies to ponder the vastness of their existence. He challenges entrenched notions of masculinity to highlight identity, queerness, and the yearning for a sense of belonging in an ever-turbulent world.
Rocha’s focus is directed inward with a version of his own likeness depicted in each work. He contemplates his identity, exploring a multiplicity of selves and my emotions in each work. He exaggerates the size of his eyes to convey vulnerability and emotion and to establish a place for experiments with light and abstraction. His solitary figures function similarly to Dodge’s in that they are struggling to find their place in the larger world.
Drew Dodge (born 2001, Monterey, California) earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2022) and has had solo exhibitions at Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2021 & 2022); L21, Palma (2021) and 1969 Gallery, New York (2023). Dodge will open his third solo exhibition at Steve Turner, Los Angeles in October 2023. This is his first presentation in Asia. He lives and works in New York.
Tiger Rocha (b. 1998, Pleasanton, California) earned a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design (2021) before moving to New York where he now lives. He had his debut solo exhibition with Steve Turner, Los Angeles in 2023; had a two-person exhibition alongside Drew Dodge at 1969 Gallery, New York (2023) and has had work in group exhibitions at Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2022) and Untitled, Miami Beach with Steve Turner (2022). This is his first presentation in Asia.
