September 10 – October 8, 2016
Steve Turner is pleased to present Soothsayer, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based Greg Ito featuring new paintings and sculptures within an environmental installation that includes pink walls and purple lights simulating the sky at twilight.
Ito’s paintings are crisply rendered, each with several symbolic images: a pair of hands; a burning candle; an hourglass; a distant view of a tropical isle; and a burning pleasure boat, airplane or house. The installation also includes a colorfully painted table, black and white candlesticks and several painted screens that have tropical plant details, the composition and color of which are also found in the paintings. The installation suggests an open-ended narrative, part fantasy and part nightmare, existing somewhere in the twilight zone.
Greg Ito (b. 1987, Los Angeles) earned a BFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute (2008). Recent exhibitions include, Summer Fling: The Barn Show, Johannes Vogt, New York; Over and Under, MON CHÉRI, Brussels; The Order of Shadowboxing, Et al., San Francisco and After Gruen at SADE, Los Angeles. He will also present work at 315 Gallery, Brooklyn in October, 2016.
